You did it! You pulled the trigger and placed a deposit on an Oklahoma Sunshine Rabbitry English Angora. Now it’s time to get a space set up for your incoming ball of fluff. In this blog I’ll be covering the basic necessities you’ll need for keeping a happy, healthy bunny; as well as tips and tricks.
Cage, Feeder & Water Options
English Angoras are a wool breed that require a little bit of extra care and starting with a proper cage it vital. Because their wool grows long on their belly and feet, it’s very important to have a wire bottom cage that they live in, at least through the night and when you are away from home. We will touch on playpen options in my next blog “The Ultimate English Angora Supplies List.”
English Angoras grow a thick padding of wool on their feet which makes for a great barrier from the wire. If you are worried about their comfort you can always provide additional foot rest mats. Check out my DIY Foot Rest Mats Blog by following the link below.
I personally started with the Dumor Heavy Duty Rabbit Cage, 24x24 from Tractor Supply with the leg kit and plastic pan. These cages were an affordable option and stack for multiple bunnies. All parts can be sanitized, unlike wood hutches, which is vital for keeping healthy rabbits. This kit also comes with a j-feeder and water bottle. The water bottle that it comes with works in a pinch but I have a much better option for water bottle that I will link below.

Poop happens. Line your bunny’s cage tray with size appropriate puppy pads. They peel right out. Give the tray a rinse with some water and vinager , dry, and lay down another pad.

I always recommend that you have a small, shallow dish of water for your bunny to use while transitioning to a new water bottle. I use ceramic pet dishes but something you could just simply find in your cupboards works fine as well.
Grooming Supplies
Let me save you a lot of time and a lot of money, searching for pet clippers that will actually work on your angora. There are two pairs that I recommend from Amazon. Sometimes they are not available at the same time so search for “Gimmar Pet Clippers” or “Holdog Clippers” if the links don’t work or show out of stock. Both sets come with my number one recommended comb and they come with an decent pair of shears. You only need to order one of the two. Make sure you oil them between each grooming.
In addition to that metal comb that comes with the clipper set, you will need a cat slicker brush.
And lastly a pet blower. I recommend blowing out your angora’s coat at least once per week. Twice or more if necessary or if you are trying to grow their coat out for show. USE THIS OUTSIDE ONLY. This doesn’t have to be fancy, and to this day I still buy the cheapest ones I can find on Amazon. A blow dryer won’t work, I’ve tried haha.
Food & Optional Suppliments
With a high quality pelleted food and unlimited hay your bunny needs for nothing. That’s why choosing a high quality pelleted food is not optional, it’s essential. I recommend Bluebonnet’s Kindle Bits. I get no kick backs for telling you this. I have been using it for years and have had amazing success with it in my rabbitry. It has 18% protein and if you choose to go with another food, I’d recommend finding something with no less than 18% protein. You can request to purchase a bag from me at pickup because I always have extra on hand or it’s also sold on chewy.

I have recently switched from feeding Timothy Grass to feeding Orchard Grass because it does have a slightly higher protein content which is a good boost for my babies and their mamas. Bunnies should have access to hay 24/7 to aid in digestion.

BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds) is an amazing, all natural supplement for conditioning for shows or for packing on some weight. It’s high in fat so watch your bunny’s weight when giving these as treats but as long as your bunny is not over weight you can offer them 1/2 to 1 Tbs. Per day. Introduce slowly and do not offer to bunnies under 12 weeks.
Please do not give your baby bunny veggies. Wait until they around 6 months old to introduce veggies if you insist on them having them. Runny poops are very common when introducing veggies and it’s just not safe for a young, captive raised rabbit.
