Over my many years of breeding English Angoras I have helped several kiddos get started in showing this very special breed. Although I do not personally show, my passion lies in breeding top quality rabbits in fun colors, as well as show quality colors. Since I offer ARBA approved colors and colors that are not approved for showing, I thought it would be helpful to write a blog post for the parents that reach out to me for their kids.
ARBA Approved Colors
Self (Solid colors in Black, Blue, Chocolate & Lilac)
Agouti/Chestnut (Black, Blue, Chocolate & Lilac Variants)
Fawn (Black, Blue, Chocolate & Lilac Variants)
Tort/Tortoiseshell (Black, Blue, Chocolate & Lilac Variants)
REW (Red Eyed White)
Pointed White
Chinchilla (Black, Blue, Chocolate & Lilac Variants)
BEW (Blue Eyed White, this is VM but they do approve this variation for some reason)
What Colors To Avoid
Otter
Harlequin
Broken Pattern (This is being worked on but is not currently approved)
VM (Vienna Marked, Identified typically with a white angel kiss on the nose)
VC/Poss. VC (Vienna Carrier)
Wool counts for the most points, 57 total and the body counts for 33. English Angoras are shown in two classes, white wool and color wool. White wool is pointed white, REW and BEW.
I dabble in breeding all colors of English Angoras, but because I enjoy helping kids get started with English Angoras, I have specific lines in my rabbitry that are dedicated to keeping genes like VM and Harlequin off of the pedigree. Without going into to much detail on genetics, those two genes can be sneaky, pop back up in a later breeding or affect small color details of a rabbit which would make the rabbit DQ (disqualified) for showing.
I highly recommend starting out with a self (single color) rabbit from my rabbitry such as Black, Blue, Chocolate or Lilac from my VM Free Lines. When you are ready to commit to a bunny, please reach out and let me know your kid is in 4H/FFA! Send proof of their participation and get a $100 discount!
A note on showing BEW (Blue Eyed White) English Angoras. I do not offer a discount on my BEW EA’s because they are pretty well sought after. As fun as the idea may be of getting one of these beauties for your kid, just know, more care and show prep comes with showing a pure white rabbit. Also, just to clarify, BEW is two copies of the Vienna Gene, meaning VM rabbits were used to get the color and VM being on the pedigree is more acceptable in this circumstance.
